The subject is organised around teachers decision making in planning and implementing learnings in social and environmental education in primary settings in contexts of increasing diversity. It aims to develop pre-service teachers competence in planning, implementing and assessing engaging, effective and culturally inclusive learning experiences and programs that position all learners as active participants in culturally diverse societies. It includes an examination of educational policies designed to promote non-sexist, non-racist and other non-discriminatory ways of relating to others in support of key values explicit in current social and environmental education programs.
Learning Outcomes
- examine and assess the theoretical orientations, sources of knowledge and pedagogy of social and environmental education for learners in primary settings;
- explore links between principles and policies in studies of society and environment and their implementation in planning, delivering and evaluating such programs in schools;
- identify and critically apply educational policies which support the values of social justice, democratic processes, ecological and economical sustainability and peace;
- use principles of culturally inclusive curriculum and pedagogy to prepare engaging and effective inquiry units which provide significant learnings in social and environmental education in a variety of contexts.
