Compulsory for all undergraduate and graduate BEd programs in primary education. Graduate BEd students are required to take this subject with or before ED3491.
This subject has been designed to equip preservice teachers with the necessary knowledge and competencies to effectively and equitably teach mathematics to primary aged children in the new millenium.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an awareness of the content and characteristics of developmentally appropriate and socially just mathematics curricula for primary school age children;
- demonstrate an understanding of the learning processes used by primary school age children of different socio-cultural backgrounds in learning mathematics;
- evaluate various teaching methods, materials and media as they relate to primary school age childrens learning stipulated in a National Statement on Mathematics for Australian Schools (1990);
- explore ways of organising the learning environment to ensure effective learning and teaching;
- construct and articulate a personal philosophy regarding the teaching and learning of mathematics in the new millenium.
