A marine sciences field course based on physical surficial processes, processes related to rainforest rivers, coastal plain, shallow nearshore shelf of North Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef. Introduction to field techniques of coastal geology and sedimentology.
Learning Outcomes
- to equip students with a broad-scope understanding of sedimentary processes in a transect of environments extending from the rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef;
- to establish a preliminary practical knowledge of the acquisition process of marine geoscience data and its analysis;
- to study sedimentary facies and soil development in the dry and wet tropical hinterland of the Great Barrier Reef;
- to examine the dynamic flux and interactions between siliciclastic terrigenous sediment and the carbonate rich-sediment associated with the reef and tropical ocean waters;
- to study and group the biological and lithological facies created by the interplay of organisms in their sedimentary environment.
