This subject is designed to help the student to read and appreciate the role and contribution of Indigenous literature in Australia. Whilst the main focus will be on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander works some non-Indigenous texts will be included to exemplify genres and conventions of English literature. The subject also aims to extend basic writing and speaking skills. Summary writing as well as academic approaches to writing will be incorporated into workshop activities.
Learning Outcomes
- engage in techniques used within the appraisal of a range of selected print and film texts;
- describe the way in which texts operate as social practices within social, historical and political contexts and within relations of power and ideology;
- critically analyse and interpret a range of texts demonstrating skills of academic writing as well as knowledge of literary terms and conventions of literary criticism;
- critically discuss genres, forms and conventions of what has come to be recognised as 'literature' and consider how Indigenous literature has been influenced by this framework.
