SCHOLARSHIPS, BURSARIES, GRANTS AND PRIZES

The provisions relating to Scholarships and Prizes are shown in this Handbook.

Scholarships, Bursaries and Grants

Undergraduate

(1) GENERAL

Academic Support Grants

Open to students who are commencing an undergraduate award course at James Cook University, either full-time, part-time, on campus or off campus. The scholarships have been established to assist students with the purchase of textbooks and other expenses. Value $300 for students who demonstrate financial hardship.

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarships

Open to students who are Australian South Sea Islanders (Australian-born descendants of predominantly Melanesian people who were brought to Queensland as indentured labourers between 1863 and 1904 from eighty Pacific Islands). $5,000 per year for full-time students and $2,500 per year for part-time students.

Brian Dalton Memorial Essay Bursary

Open to an undergraduate or postgraduate student who is enrolled in any discipline and who submits an article relating to any aspect of the life or voyages of Captain James Cook or his companions, their times as they may have influenced decisions relating to him, the impact of their voyages on European science and culture or on the people or places visited by his ships. The $650 bursary will be offered on the basis of a 500-700 word outline which the awardee would be required to develop into a 5,000 word article with illustrations, bibliography and notes and which would be published in the journal Endeavour Lines.

Cairns City Council International Scholarship

Open to Japanese citizens applying to commence a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the JCU Cairns campus during 2004 or Semester 1, 2005, in the area of technology, business, commerce or tourism. There will be a single scholarship of $5,000.

David Hastings Bursary

Open to physically handicapped full-time undergraduate students whose normal domicile is to the north of the 22nd degree of south latitude in the State of Queensland (above a line from St Lawrence through Muttaburra). The value of the bursary is $700.

George Roberts CBE Bursary

Open to students who have been in residence at George Roberts Hall for at least one full academic year, have proved to be outstanding residents who contribute to the ethos of the hall and have achieved an average standard (at least) of the grade of credit in subjects comprising their undergraduate major at first year level. It has been established to contribute towards the full board accommodation expenses for one academic year. The value of the bursary will be deducted from annual accommodation fees.

Hugh Alexander Grierson Trust Bursary

Open to Indigenous Australian students of the University. The value of the scholarship is $1500 in money, books, equipment or payment for residential accommodation.

James Cook University Alumni Ferry Property Scholarship

Open to students who have at least one parent who has received a degree from James Cook University and who are enrolled in a degree program at James Cook University. The value of the scholarship is $5,000.

James Cook University Alumni Scholarship

Open to students who have at least one parent who has received a degree from James Cook University and who are enrolled in a degree program at James Cook University. The value of the scholarship is $5,000 (depending on available funds) or such amount as the Selection Committee determine from time to time.

Lillian Cavell Memorial Scholarships

Open to full-time level 2 students of a bachelors program of the University. The value of the scholarship is $5000.

Lynn Pery Arts Grant

Open to students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia, hold a Health Care Card or are dependent on a person who holds one, have completed level 1 of their current Bachelors program and are enrolled for level 2 or above in one of the following Bachelors programs at the University – Bachelor of Visual Arts; Bachelor of Photography; Bachelor of Communication Design. The value of the grant is $450.

Remote Residence Grant

Open to students who are classified as remote resident students, hold a Health Care Card or are dependent on a person who holds one and have completed at least level 1 of their current Bachelors program at the University. The value of the grant is $450.

Summer Research Scholarships

Open to currently enrolled undergraduate students completing level 3 or level 4 studies of a full-time course leading to an honours degree. Scholarship recipients are expected to participate in an ongoing research project or to undertake a substantial piece of supervised research work.

Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Outstanding Students

Open to students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia, have achieved outstanding academic merit considering the adverse circumstances which the candidate has overcome, have completed their final year at school within the two years prior to applying for the scholarship and are enrolling in the first year of a full-time undergraduate course of study at James Cook University. The value of the scholarship is $5000

Xerox Shop Mount Isa Text Book Grant

Open to level 1 students of the University who attended a secondary school in Mount Isa. The value of the scholarship is $500.

(2) FACULTY OF ARTS, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Dean’s Scholarship in Arts, Education and Social Sciences

Open to competition among candidates who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia, have received an Overall Position (OP) of 1 or its equivalent from other Australian states, have completed their final year of school within two years of applying for the scholarship and are enrolling in an undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences. The value of the scholarship is $6,000.

Elizabeth Cookson Memorial Bursary

Open to an Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or Australian South Sea Islander student who is entering the Honours year in the field of anthropology, history, Indigenous Australian studies or literature and who examines an issue of relevance to Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander or South Sea Islander culture. The value of the bursary is $300.

Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences Entry Bursaries

Open to first year students in a Bachelors program in the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences who are school leavers. Ten bursaries each valued at the equivalent of one year of up-front HECS fees for enrolment in a degree course will be offered (approximately $2600).

Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences Travel Grant

Provides financial support to students wishing to expand their educational experience by undertaking study at an overseas institution. The grant is open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia, are enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, have completed the equivalent of one year of full-time study in their current undergraduate degree or six months of full-time study towards their current postgraduate degree directly prior to applying for the grant and have achieved a credit average or better across their current course. Four grants to the value of $2,500 each will be awarded each year. This payment will be made upon confirmation of the student’s enrolment at an overseas institution.

JCU Bookshop Bursaries

Open to students within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia, have successfully completed their year 1 subjects and are enrolled in the second year of a degree course offered by the Faculty. There shall be ten bursaries, each to the value of $500. Bursaries are by way of credits at the JCU Bookshop and may not be converted to cash, nor transferred from one year to the next.

Leo and Mabel Barnett Travelling Bursary

Open to graduates of James Cook University of no more than three years standing since completion of a first or undergraduate degree having in that degree a three year sequence in French with a grade of at least one distinction in the level 3 core subject. Applicants should intend to become a teacher of French in a Queensland secondary school or already be a teacher of French in a Queensland secondary school. Must be committed to spending a minimum of one month in Continental France and be unassisted for travel purposes by other scholarships or grants. $2,000.

Maastricht Travel Support Grants

Established by the School of Psychology to provides financial support to students wishing to expand their educational experience by undertaking study at the University of Maastricht. The grant is open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia, are enrolled in one of the School’s APS accredited undergraduate degree programs, have completed the equivalent of two years of full-time study in their degree directly prior to applying for the grant and have achieved a distinction average or better across their course and across all their Psychology subjects. From two to four grants totalling $10,000 will be awarded each year. This payment will be made upon confirmation of the student’s enrolment at Maastricht University.

Shirley Gilliver Memorial Fund Grants

Open to students in a Bachelor of Community Welfare or Bachelor of Social Work program. The value of these travelling grants shall be determined from time to time.

(3) FACULTY OF LAW, BUSINESS AND THE CREATIVE ARTS

Faculty of Law, Business and the Creative Arts Dean’s Scholarship and Entry Bursaries

Open to level 1 students of a bachelors program in the Faculty of Law, Business and the Creative Arts. One Dean’s Bursary worth $5000 and two $2500 bursaries in each of the three schools of the Faculty – Law, Business and the Creative Arts.

JCU Bookshop Bursaries

Open to second year candidates who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia and who are enrolled in a minimum of 18 units in year 2 and have successfully completed their year 1 subjects at JCU. Five bursaries valued at $250 each will be offered each in the School of Law and COMVAT and ten $250 bursaries will be offered in the School of Business. Bursaries are by way of credits at the JCU Bookshop and may not be converted to cash, nor transferred from one year to the next.

(4) FACULTY OF MEDICINE, HEALTH AND MOLECULAR SCIENCES

Eric Booth Memorial Grants

Travelling grants or grants for the purchase of maintenance items, open to honours and postgraduate students in Chemistry.

Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences Entry Bursaries

Open to first year students of a bachelors program in the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences. One $4000 bursary shall be awarded in each school of the faculty.

JCU Bookshop Bursaries

Open to students within the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Molecular Sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia; have enrolled in a minimum of 18 units in year 2; and have successfully completed their year 1 subjects. 10 bursaries offered annually. Two bursaries, valued at $500 each, shall be awarded in each school of the faculty. Awarded as a credit for the purchase of books and associated items at the JCU Bookshop.

Mick McLoughlin Memorial Bursary

Open to students who are enrolled in Year 5 of the MBBS program and intend to undertake the Year 6 elective in the developing world. The value of the bursary is $2500.

North Dakota Rural Bursary

Open to candidates who are enrolled in year 2 of the MBBS program and who demonstrate an interest in rural medicine and who are able to undertake a rural elective in North Dakota. The value of the bursary shall be a return economy airfare from North Queensland to North Dakota and support for living expenses, or such amount as the Selection Committee determines from time to time.

Townsville Bulletin Scholarship in Medicine

Open to first year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery program and who reside in the area bounded by Innisfail in the North, Bowen in the South and Mount Isa in the West. The value of the scholarship is $5000.

(5) FACULTY OF SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy Education Endowment Fund Scholarships

Open to Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science with Honours students leading to a geo-science specialisation of relevance to the mining industry. The value of the scholarships are: $4000 for students enrolled in level 1 and 2; $7000 for students enrolled in level 3 and 4.

Dean’s Scholarship in Science, Engineering and Information Technology

Open to full-time students of the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia and have received an Overall Position (OP) of 1 or its equivalent from other Australian states. The value of the scholarship is $10,000.

Economic Geology Research Unit Honours Scholarship

Open to persons who have applied and gained entry into the Bachelor of Science with Honours program in the discipline of geology and intend to specialise in economic geology in the elective portions of the program and intend to progress to a career in economic geology.

Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology Entry Bursaries

Open to first year students of a bachelors program in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Information Technology. Ten bursaries to the value of $2000 each shall be awarded.

J.J. McDonald and Sons Engineering Pty Ltd Undergraduate Bursary

Open to students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia and who are enrolled in the second year civil engineering program or who are enrolled in joint degree programs which include civil engineering as the engineering component. One scholarship may be awarded annually. The value of the scholarship is $2000.

QNI Ltd Undergraduate Scholarships

Open to students who enrol in a program or joint program in the following disciplines: chemical engineering, chemistry, industrial chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, computer systems engineering, environmental engineering. Up to two scholarships of $10,000 each will be awarded annually.

Postgraduate

(1) GENERAL

Cairns City Council International Scholarship

Open to Japanese citizens applying to commence a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the JCU Cairns campus during 2004 or Semester 1, 2005, in the area of technology, business, commerce or tourism. There will be a single scholarship of $5,000.

James Cook University Postgraduate Research Scholarships

Open to candidates with a four year Bachelor with honours degree enrolled full-time undertaking projects within the University’s Area of Research Focus. Each scholarship provides a generous annual tax-exempt stipend.

(2) FACULTY OF ARTS, EDUCATION AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences Travel Grant

Provides financial support to students wishing to expand their educational experience by undertaking study at an overseas institution. The grant is open to students who are citizens or permanent residents of Australia, are enrolled in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree within the Faculty of Arts, Education and Social Sciences, have completed the equivalent of one year of full-time study in their current undergraduate degree or six months of full-time study towards their current postgraduate degree directly prior to applying for the grant and have achieved a credit average or better across their current course. Four grants to the value of $2,500 each will be awarded each year. This payment will be made upon confirmation of the student’s enrolment at an overseas institution.

Shirley Gilliver Memorial Fund Grants

Open to students in a Masters of Social Policy or a Doctorate in rural community research program. The value of these travelling grants shall be determined from time to time.

(3) FACULTY OF LAW, BUSINESS AND THE CREATIVE ARTS

Sir George Kneipp Memorial Postgraduate Scholarship in Law

Open to students enrolled in a postgraduate program in law, who completed a Bachelor of Laws at the University. The value of the scholarship is $1000.

(4) FACULTY OF MEDICINE, HEALTH AND MOLECULAR SCIENCES

Mark Patterson Memorial Bursary

Open to competition among candidates who are enrolled in a Bachelor of Science (Honours), or Doctorate students undertaking research in animal or human immunology. The bursary will be available for one year;

Tom and Dorothy Cook Fellow in Tropical Health Award

Open to candidates who hold a suitable degree in a health related or other relevant discipline who undertakes research which will lead to the strategic research direction of the School of Public Health, Tropical Medicine and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Samuel and Eileen Gluyas Fellowship

For research in the field of cattle diseases, breeding and husbandry.

Robert Logan Memorial Grants

Travelling grants or grants for purchase of maintenance items, available to honours and postgraduate students in biochemistry.

Thelma Myers Memorial Indigenous Nursing Scholarship

Open to registered nurses who are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent who have been accepted for postgraduate studies or for a higher degree in research within the School of Nursing Science at James Cook University. The value of this scholarship is $5000.

(5) FACULTY OF SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology Bursary

Awarded in recognition of an outstanding performance during the Doctor of Philosophy degree conformation of candidature process on a topic relevant to marine science, marine engineering or marine technology. The value of this bursary is $1500.

James Cook University Physics Research Scholarships

Open to full-time study towards a Master of Science by Research or the degree of Doctor of Philosophy within physics in a field approved by the Head of the School.

Noel & Kate Monkman Postgraduate Award

Open to full-time study towards Master of Science or Doctor of Philosophy in marine biology.
