Venomous Australian Animals

This subject outlines the differences between venoms and poisons in the animal kingdom. Students will acquire the knowledge of how and why organisms use venoms. The subject will describe the places people may come into contact with venomous organisms in Australia and how to identify harmful from non-harmful organisms. The subject will also describe the process the human body undergoes when these venoms are introduced into the system and the relevant first aid practices that should be employed to maximise a victim's survival.

Learning Objectives:

to gain knowledge on the ecology of venomous organisms;

to understand the differences between venoms used by organisms;

to understand the various mechanisms employed by organisms to introduce venoms into prey/victims;

to understand how animal venoms affect the human system;

to learn the correct first aid treatments for victims envenomed by organisms in the field.

Assessment by examination (50%); assignment (20%); field evolving problems notebook (30%).
