This subject examines the ways in which social, political and economic factors shape the experience of disability and the principles and methods required to ensure that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as other members of society.

Learning Objectives:

critically analyse the social construction of disability;

identify disabling practices and policies and their implications and recognise how change can be effected;

examine the impact of gender, racial origin and cultural context on disability;

demonstrate a sound knowledge of state and federal legislation relating to disability and the implications of these;

develop practice perspectives for working in the disability field.

Assessment by short answer questions (30%); project/essay (70%).
