Aquatic Pathobiology

26 hours lectures, 3 hours tutorials, 36 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Normal anatomy and histology of aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates from a disease perspective; responses to disease; description of important infectious diseases of aquatic animals and control; case studies with an aquaculture bias; establishment of piscine cell lines.

Learning Objectives:

introduce students to the major aquatic diseases in Australia;

demonstrate the role quarantine plays in controlling aquatic disease;

teach the students the diagnostic approach to disease control;

introduce the students to the various methods of pathogen isolation and culture used when investigating fish kills;

introduce the students to research;

introduce diagnostic case studies.

Assessment by examination (65%); project/mini thesis (25%); case reports (10%).
