Assoc. Professor P Leggat (Coordinator).

This subject aims to allow students to demonstrate a level of skill in research in public health or tropical medicine to a greater degree of sophistication than TM5549 . The amount of work required is that associated with a 9 unit subject; approximately 360 hours of personal time. Students must undertake an original research project of a relevant issue to such a level that the outcome can be published in a peer reviewed journal. Research must result in the advancement of knowledge in the field of public health or tropical medicine. Research that does not have this component will not be suitable for successful completion of this subject. The student must negotiate supervision by academic staff within the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, obtain approval of research methodology from the SPHTM Research Committee and ethics approval from the JCU Ethics Committee. The expected outcome is acceptance of a manuscript by a peer reviewed journal. Once accepted, the manuscript will be evaluated by the SPHTM Research Committee and a decision made about its contribution to existing knowledge. Prior to enrolment in this subject students should consult with the subject coordinator.

Assessment by dissertation (100%).
