Environmental Risk and Social Practice

This subject examines the current transformation of rural life in north Queensland in the context of the relationship between society and the natural environment. The issues addressed include: new industries, work processes and environmental impact on both land and sea; changing forms of property and resource; and changing attitudes to family, community, environment and marginal groups. These issues are considered from the perspective of the analysis of risk and the concept of the risk society. Case materials are drawn from throughout Australia and the rest of the world, with an emphasis on tropical environments and societies.

Learning Objectives:

develop an understanding of the key concepts in environmental sociology;

critically explore the relationship between the environment and social processes;

learn to apply sociological theory to the analysis of contemporary social and environmental issues;

develop analytical and research skills for the analysis of social impact.

Assessment by in-class examination (30%); seminar presentation/essay (30%); research project (40%).
