Social Survey Design and Analysis

26 hours lectures, 24 hours practicals. Semester 2 (Townsville campus) Semester 1 (Cairns campus).

The subject addresses how best to investigate and research social issues through surveys including the gathering of qualitative and quantitative information. A variety of sampling techniques, computer aided analysis and presentation of research findings are also covered.

Learning Objectives:

understand the main components of conducting a social survey;

obtain hands-on experience in carrying out a social survey;

develop a range of skills relating to survey methodology, promote critical understanding and enhance presentation of analyses in written and oral forms;

increase capabilities to work together in a team.

Assessment by research project (maximum 2500 words) (40%); practical work (30%); a two-hour final examination (30%).
