An Extended Introduction to Ageing and Mental Health

The subject comprises three modules. Module one addressed the demography of the aged population in Australia and the biological, social and psychological processes of ageing. Stereotypes of ageing and successful ageing are considered in conjunction with the concerns of race, gender and crime. Module two covers classification issues, emotional changes, depression, anxiety, mood and cognitive disorders. Ethical and practical issues of care and counselling form the basis of module three.

Learning Objectives:

demonstrate knowledge of the demography of the aged in Australia;

demonstrate knowledge of biological, social and psychological processes of ageing;

demonstrate an understanding of the stereotypes of ageing and successful ageing;

demonstrate an understanding of emotional changes, depression, anxiety, mood and cognitive disorders;

recognise and have an overview of the issues involved in classification; ethics; counselling; care; race; gender and crime.

Assessment by three assignments (30% each); learning activities (10%).
