Exercise and the Environment

36 hours lectures, 6 hours tutorials, 21 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Physiological and biochemical adaptations to exercise. Fatigue, lactate threshold, blood pressure, respiratory quotient. Physiological and biochemical acclimitisation to exercise in conditions of heat and high humidity, extreme cold, altitude, aquatic environments and microgravity.

Learning Objectives:

to understand the theoretical concepts covered in lectures;

to solve problems related to these topics;

to undertake experimental work and write laboratory reports;

gain a thorough understanding of the various affects of different environmental conditions on the physiology of the human body, both at rest and during exercise.

Assessment by a three-hour end-of-semester examination (55%); on-course tests and assignments (45%).
