Instrumental and Analytical Techniques

24 hours lectures, 24 hours practicals. December block mode.

Available to level 3 science students or other suitably qualified students (e.g. Engineering).

Introduction to sampling, statistics and basic spectroscopy. Using the periodic table as a base, the assignment of appropriate analytical techniques (X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy etc.) for specific elements in solids and liquid. Analysis of inorganic and organic materials, quality management and control and laboratory safety. Case histories.

Learning Objectives:

to introduce participants to a broad range of scientific instrumentation and analytical techniques used in environmental, mining and other sectors;

to provide a theoretical basis for analytical techniques;

to gently introduce appropriate concepts of physics and chemistry for analytical techniques;

to provide a comprehensive practical response to analysis;

discernment and training in the selection of analytical techniques, particularly in environmental and industrial situations;

to provide a basic understanding of sampling;

to provide a working knowledge of quality management and control (ISO 9002 and NATA requirements);

to provide a comprehensive knowledge of workplace health and safety considerations.

Assessment by practical book (50%); take-home examination (50%).
