This subject provides training in the selection and application of clinical interventions to health-related problems and psychological models in health-risk assessment and illness prevention. System level interventions (school, work organisation, community) will be explored as part of primary prevention of disease, with public health advocacy in secondary prevention. The applicability of clinical interventions for the behavioural management and treatment of illness in tertiary care will be discussed. Other interventions presented include behaviour change and social skills interventions (smoking, alcohol consumption) to reduce the incidence of disease risk; stress and pain management and family interventions to minimise the impact of illness.

Learning Objectives:

provide students with an appreciation of applied theoretical orientations to health;

provide students with intervention skills at the individual and community level;

provide a conceptual and practical basis for health care provision.

Assessment by mid-semester examination (25%); practical work (35%); end-of-semester examination (40%).
