Haematology 1

This subject introduces the student to haematology and the haematology laboratory. The structure and function of blood cells is reviewed, concentrating on issues applicable to the diagnosis of clinical pathology. Basic methods of quantitation of blood components are introduced as are techniques used to establish the diagnosis of normal haemostasis. The subject has a major practical focus, which begins the process of professional competency for a medical laboratory scientist in haematology.

Learning Objectives:

become familiar with the haematology laboratory;

become proficient in basic diagnostic techniques used in a haematology laboratory and understand their use in classifying clinical pathology;

be able to identify the structure and function of cellular blood components;

understand normal haemostasis and techniques of its determination.

Assessment by theory examination (50%); practical examination/practical reports (35%); assignment (15%).
