Introduction to Physiology and Pharmacology

39 hours lectures, 36 hours workshops/seminars. Semester 2.

Available to all students except those enrolled in Bachelor of Nursing Science, Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy, Sport and Exercise Science and Medicine/Surgery.

This subject will provide foundation knowledge and understanding of the physiological function of the body and the principles of the action of drugs. After a broad introduction to the major body systems, learning acitivities will develop around the themes of homeostasis, nervous and endocrine regulation of function, the interaction of the body with the external environment and comparative functional physiology. Topics to be addressed include the complexity and diversity of physiological function, biological rhythms, regulation of key aspects of body homeostasis, introduction to cell communication and regulation and an introduction to drug actions, dispersal and toxicology.

Learning Objectives:

understand the key functions of the major body systems;

develop an awareness of the molecular and cellular basis of regulation of cell function;

provide insight into the principle mechanisms that control and regulate selected aspects of internal body function in the face of changing internal and external influences;

introduce students to the fundamental concepts of pharmacology and toxicology.

Assessment by examination (70%); written assignments (30%).
