Molecular Basis of Therapeutics 1

The following content (~26 lectures) is common with Ch1002 .

Physical Chemistry. Electrochemistry; chemical kinetics; phase equilibria and colligative properties.

Organic Chemistry. General features of organic reactions. Mechanisms and applications of major reaction types. Structure determination of organic compounds.

The following content (~12 lectures) is specific to PC1005.

Bioinorganic Chemistry. the role of transition metal ions in biological systems.

Introductory Medicinal Chemistry. Influence of factors such as size, shape, ionisation state and substituent groups on the biological action of selected drugs.

Learning Objectives:

in conjunction with Ch1001 , to provide the background in key chemical concepts and principles necessary for appropriate understanding of the pharmaceutics, medicinal chemistry and pharmacology subjects in later years of the course;

develop competence in the application of common laboratory techniques in chemistry, particularly those relevant to the measurement of drug structure and activity.

Assessment by laboratory work and reports (25%); three-hour examination (75%).
