Computing, Switches and Interfaces for People with Disabilities

Townsville

40 hours flexible delivery. Full year Limited Attendance.

Students must commence this subject in Semester 1.

An introduction to the various hardware (equipment) and software (program) types that are commercially available to aid people with different disabilities gain access to general computer resources. The subject will aim to provide an understanding of the benefits and disadvantages of different techniques and methods of optimising equipment benefit. There will also be a strong emphasis on the technical matters associated with switches and interfaces and how to modify, adapt or design new interfaces for use with toys, lights, mobility equipment and/or computers. The final module will consider the key aspects of integration.

Learning Objectives:

an understanding of the use of switches and various interfaces to electronic systems;

ability to issue, manufacture and assess for the use of electronic interfaces.

Assessment by log book from practicals; report on supplied case study; residential examination.
