Issues of Sexuality for Allied Health Professionals

36 hours lectures. August block mode.

Available ONLY to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Certificate of Allied Health Sciences and Master of Occupational Therapy (Coursework).

Human sexual development across the lifespan will be described with relevance to issues raised within health professional's practice. Cultural issues that occur within a multicultural society and gender choices will be explored in conjunction with professional ethics, religion, morality and Australian law. Students will gain knowledge of sexual concerns and issues for people with disabilities. This subject does not intend to equip students with the skills to conduct sex counselling.

Learning Objectives:

define the scope of human sexuality throughout the lifespan;

understand the influence of culture, history, religion and the contemporary moral and ethical views on human sexuality;

identify possible effects of illness, injury, disability on sexual functioning and demonstrate competency in the support of clients to express concerns in relation to problems and dysfunction associated with various disabilities;

outline the role and limitations of allied health professionals in the management of sexual issues and dysfunction for the client.

Assessment by self reflective journal and presentation (50%); case study (50%). (Self reflective journal to be undertaken on course, self reflection on the following topics but not limited to: concept of sexuality, insights gained through the learning process, views on sexuality of people with disabilities, awareness of limitations as a sexual being and a professional.)
