Advanced Professional Skills

Townsville

92 contact hours. Semester 2.

Available to Bachelor of Occupational Therapy and Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) students.

Advanced professional skills will be applied to current professional practice in a number of employment settings, such as health, education, industry, rural and remote, indigenous and primary care. Specialist competency may be acquired in the following domains reflecting the lifespan such as childhood, adolescence, adulthood, middle age and the elderly. Advanced professional skills may include but are not limited to the following examples: driving assessment, paediatrics, occupational health and safety, mental health practice, indigenous community service delivery, rehabilitation, information technology, access issues, specific clinical conditions requiring an advanced knowledge and skills acquisition. The individual modules will be available in semester mode and/or in two week half block mode enabling other subjects to run concurrently.

Learning Objectives:

define personal learning needs;

understand and apply advanced occupational therapy concepts to an identified professional service delivery sector;

demonstrate competence in an advanced professional skill;

carry out professional roles and responsibilities for selected advanced professional skills topics;

demonstrate an understanding of the range of skills, resources and services available to prospective client groups;

identify own learning needs and develop lifelong skills in seeking supervision, professional support and mentorship;

demonstrate competency in transferable skills for self management, communication and learning.

Assessment by on-course activities for six elements (100%). (Students complete six of eight modules. Assessment may include article review, intervention plan, case study etc. Each element marked out of 20 (total 120) then scaled to 100%.)
