Rural and Urban Practice - Australian OT Perspectives
Available only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (international students only).

The subject will provide a minimum of 144 hours of supervised clinical placement with flexible support from the University to integrate previous academic material and clinical experience, with a new observational and practical clinical training. The placement will be either rural or urban and will enable the student to apply, utilise and develop the theories and principles of occupational therapy in a variety of settings.
Students may be required to undertake clinical placements in a facility away from the campus at which they are currently enrolled, at their own expense.

ability to demonstrate data collection techniques for total quality management of the client and/or training facility;
ability to critically analyse the inter-relationship between occupational therapy theory, research and intervention;
demonstrate higher problem solving skills in formulating aims of intervention and applying therapeutic activities and techniques in a culturally aware manner across the spectrum of rural and urban settings;
Assessment by learning contract and reflection of learning (50%); essays - case study/project presentation (50%); student placement evaluation (pass/fail); honours record (pass/fail); 100% attendance on fieldwork placement; satisfactory completion of all assessment items is necessary to pass the subject.
Supervisors with support from Fieldwork Manager and educators, will complete the student placement evaluation form. This form is underpinned with the Entry Level Competencies for OT and complements the James Cook University Generic Skills; critical thinking, problem solving, international understanding, learning, communication and social and cultural awareness. In addition the students will concurrently demonstrate, in writing, their ability to link appropriate and relevant theoretical principles to the particular skills they have selected for their assessment. This subject will be marked as a non-graded pass/fail based on the student's ability to meet competency standards.
