Clinical Medicine for Therapy

39 hours lectures, 26 hours tutorials. Semester 2.

Ot2003 is a corequisite subject.

Available to level 2 Occupational Therapy students. Non-occupational therapy students required to consult the subject coordinator prior to start of semester.

The subject provides basic knowledge of aetiology, pathology, signs and symptoms, management and prognosis of disease conditions encountered in Occupational Therapy practice throughout the lifespan.

Major topics will include: congenital, medical, surgical, psychiatric and geriatric conditions; trauma related injuries and degenerative disease processes; medical and surgical interventions are addressed, developments in prevention and community care with emphasis on psychological sequelae for all age related disabilities.

Learning Objectives:

describe the aetiology, pathology, signs and symptoms, management and prognosis of medical, surgical, psychiatric and age related disorders commonly encountered in occupational therapy practice;

analyse the functional implications of damage or dysfunction to psychological and biological systems in the body as they relate to occupational performance;

identify the difficulties, losses and abilities of individuals and the compensations they must make as a result of these dysfunctions showing an understanding of the individual's experience of the disorder;

demonstrate correct usage of appropriate scientific and medical terminology.

Assessment by examination (50%); on-course assessment (50%).
