Occupational Practice

26 hours lectures, 13 hours tutorials, 26 hours workshops, 36 hours field work. Semester 2.

Available to level 1 Occupational Therapy students.

This subject develops the knowledge of normal lifespan development to include aspects of productivity, school occupations, leisure and play. The tasks and roles that an individual is able to perform to provide support for self, family or community through the production of goods or provision of services. This subject will include those tasks and roles that are performed for entertainment, creativity and celebration and will address the influences of social, cultural, individual and environmental factors in addition to the effects of illness and disability.

Learning Objectives:

explain the role of occupational therapy in promoting health through occupation;

explain the influence of social, cultural, physical and sensory environments on occupational performance and how this would affect occupation selection;

explain the role of intrapersonal factors in healthy occupational functioning;

plan occupational therapy intervention using the occupational therapy process through the setting of goals and objectives;

understand the work environment of a multidisciplinary team;

demonstrate professional behaviours, including communication while observing an occupational therapist in a real life setting.

Assessment by oral examination (30%); assessment of fieldwork (25%); on-course assessment (45%).
