Physiological Processes in Midwifery

Semester 1.

Available to students who have registration as a nurse; Bachelor's preparation in nursing or a related discipline; twelve months clinical nursing practice prior to commencement of the course.

Aspects of anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and microbiology relevant to normal pregnancy, labour and lactation.

Learning Objectives:

anatomy of male and female reproductive systems and the biology of sex;

physiological processes of fertilisation, pregnancy labour and the puerporium;

physiology of pain and the interventions appropriate to childbirth;

embryology and foetal development;

immunology and infections as relevant to pregnancy/labour.

Students will be encouraged to think independently about these topics, conduct literature searches and will participate in regularly scheduled discussion groups.

Assessment by a two-hour examination (40%); on-course assessment (60%).
