Nursing Inquiry for Specialist Practice

HECS Band 1

Semester 1 and 2.

Applicants are required to be eligible for registration as a nurse in Queensland or elsewhere in Australia; hold a recognised undergraduate degree in nursing or a related discipline or its equivalent as approved by the Head of the School of Nursing Sciences; have 12 months minimum postgraduate clinical experience.

This subject aims to introduce the registered nurse to professional nurse practice issues. As reflective nurse practitioners students will explore issues such as human responses to illness, ethico-legal issues in specialty nursing practice and assessing specialist nursing practice using competency standards. Students will be provided with the opportunity to apply knowledge gained to their area of specialist nursing practice.

Learning Objectives:

recognise and demonstrate the required abilities to be a reflective practitioner;

describe communication practices which establish and maintain collaborative and constructive relationships with clients and colleagues in the intensive care unit;

demonstrate an understanding of and application of ethico-legal principle to the student's practice;

engage in activities which enhance the student's own and colleagues' ongoing education and abilities as a specialist intensive care nurse.

Assessment by two assignments (40% and 60%).
