In this subject the students explore the theoretical concepts of person, health, environment and caring as they relate to nursing. A primary focus of this subject is developing an awareness of the health status of the individual, the family and the community. In nursing laboratories, opportunities are provided to develop and practise foundation clinical skills to use in both assessment and intervention when caring for the low dependency patient.

describe the influence of variables such as culture, lifestyle, values and beliefs on the health of the individual, the family and the community;
outline the precautions necessary to maintain a safe environment for the patient, the nurse and colleagues;
develop the foundation clinical skills needed for the assessment of the health status of the individual, the family and the community;
