Available to Master of Science (Research) and Master of Biomedical Science (Research) students in Microbiology and Immunology.

Candidates will carry out an extensive review of the world literature on a selected topic which will be incorporated into a thesis. They will also undertake a substantial independent research investigation on a mutually agreed topic. Students will be expected to complete a thesis, not normally exceeding 160 pages (including figures and tables). The thesis will be of a sufficient standard to satisfy the examiners (three), one of whom will be external.

Learning Objectives:

review the scientific literature on a particular topic;

prepare a dissertation on the topic which critically reviews the literature;

understand aspects of experiment planning, costing, execution and data interpretation;

understand scientific conventions in writing and data presentation.

Assessment by examination of the thesis by three examiners (100%).
