Advanced Aquatic Pathobiology

30 hours lectures, 8 hours hours tutorials, 72 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Normal anatomy and histology of aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates is outlined from a disease perspective. Description of important infectious diseases of aquatic animals and control will be discussed. Case studies with an aquaculture bias will be presented. Theoretical and practical aspects of establishment of piscine cell lines are introduced.

Learning Objectives:

introduce participants to the major aquatic diseases in Australia;

demonstrate the role which quarantine plays in controlling aquatic disease;

outline the diagnostic approach to disease control;

introduce the various methods of pathogen isolation and culture associated with fish kills;

introduce participants to research.

Assessment by laboratory assignments (30%); a theory examination (60%); written and research assignment (10%).
