International Health

This subject will examine the experience of medical practice in international settings, including an overview of major health patterns internationally, the burden of disease in international health disasters and low resource settings, health consequences of human rights violation, war and disaster and refugee health. Students will gain an understanding of the challenges for health services providers and be taught communication skills in counselling in special situations.

Learning Objectives:

describe and evaluate the social, cultural, political, economic and organisational factors affecting health and medical practice in low resource settings;

describe the major health patterns internationally, the measures of quality of life and their applications (QALYS, DALYS) and the major factors impacting upon health internationally;

discuss and critically analyse ethical dilemmas faced by doctors in international health settings;

critically appraise the roles of doctors and health services in relation to human rights;

view health and illness from a ecological perspective related activity.

This subject is assessed within an integrated assessment program for all subjects during the academic year. Students must participate in all formative assessment tasks to achieve eligibility to sit summative assessment tasks that include in Semester 1 an integrated written assignment (10% of the year's marks) and in Semester 2 an integrated examination consisting of a written component (60%) and practical component (30%). Attendance at clinical skills sessions is mandatory and completion to a satisfactory level is required.
