Advanced Journalism Theory

26 hours workshops/seminars. Semester 1.

Available to Bachelor of Journalism honours students.

Students familiarise themselves with the various schools of theory which have come to be applied to the study of journalism and media industries. They are encouraged to evaluate the usefulness or otherwise of such approaches and to apply their selection of them both to their own practice and to a range of issues in the Australian media.

Learning Objectives:

to become familiar with the theoretical approaches to the media introduced during the course;

to identify the ways in which these theories affect an understanding of the role of the journalist and the media in society and the processes of media production;

to increase journalistic self-awareness.

Assessment by participation in seminars (20%); seminar presentation and defence (20%); formally submitted seminar paper (20%); major essay (40%).
