HECS Band 1

3-5 days field trip. Semester 1 and 2 Limited Attendance (Townsville and Cairns campus). April and September block mode (Townsville campus).

The subject provides students with the opportunity to develop the skills and understanding students require to undertake community-based research in their own discipline area. Students will engage in direct interaction with Indigenous peoples delivering the teaching component of the field trip and, during that process, will identify a topic for an independent research project relevant to their area of expertise. A proposal for the approval of the Head of School must be submitted.

Learning Objectives:

explore student's own world view and cultural values and beliefs;

examine the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of identified Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Island communities;

identify and analyse issues for Indigenous Australians in contemporary Australian society;

develop insights into the processes of Indigenous epistemological and ontological perspectives and ethical considerations;

develop research skills.

Assessment by research proposal (20%); research report (80%).
