Interpreting Research

Semester 2 Limited Attendance (with compulsory on-campus seminar).

Available to students undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma or the Master of Indigenous Studies, or other postgraduate students.

This subject focuses on the analysis and interpretation of data collected qualitatively. It takes into account theories that assist in the construction of meaning for data from Indigenous contexts. Students are taught to systematically code and create themes from data sources such as interviews, focus groups and document analysis. They are also shown how to write qualitatively in an analytical style.

Learning Objectives:

code and create themes from qualitative data collected from Indigenous contexts or about Indigenous issues;

place themes in a meaningful sequence for the report or thesis;

use current theories to assist in data interpretation;

write a qualitative report of research conducted.

Assessment by attendance and completion of minor assignments during on-campus seminar (20%); on-line tutorial discussions (30%); major assignment (50%).
