Indigenous Community Management and Development 2

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students who have successfully completed this subject at level 1 and other undergraduate students who are eligible to take a level 2 subject.

This subject explores the skills and knowledge necessary for workers venturing into the community management and development field in an Indigenous context. It will examine some of the social determinants in relation to sustainability of community management and development. The concepts of self-determination, capacity building, participatory democracy, equality and cooperative relationships will be discussed along with the underlying assumptions developed by service providers in assessing the needs of Indigenous communities.

Learning Objectives:

develop a view of Australia's history, political, social and cultural frameworks from an Indigenous perspective;

ability to critically analyse government policies and their impact on Indigenous people;

challenge and review student's own personal views and attitudes towards Indigenous people and issues;

develop knowledge and contribute to informed debate about current Indigenous issues.
