The Political Context of Indigenous Australians 2

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students who have successfully completed this subject at level 1 and other undergraduate students who are eligible to take a level 2 subject.

This subject examines the effects of change over time on Indigenous Australians' beliefs, values and equality through the introduction of a Western political regime. The association between Indigenous Australians and the legal system and how history, directly and indirectly, has affected the present state of Indigenous and non-Indigenous relations will be addressed.

Learning Objectives:

examine the Western regime and its impact on Indigenous Australians;

develop a rights-based terms of reference in critically analysing government policies towards Indigenous Australians;

develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous Legal Issues;

gain an understanding of the complex social and legal issues facing Indigenous Australians in contemporary Australia.

gain a knowledge of human rights and social justice and the role of advocacy in promoting Indigenous well-being through law reform.
