Indigenous Community Management and Development 1

Available to Bachelor of Indigenous Studies students and other undergraduate students.

This subject introduces students to community management and development in an Indigenous context. It will focus on exploring the historical issues relating to Indigenous Australians and the impact those issues have on the implementation and sustainability of community management and development strategies/programs. This will include the evolvement of Deed Of Grant In Trust (DOGIT) communities, the role and functions of councils/organisations, Indigenous community dynamics and protocols. The current status of federal, state and local government roles and functions relating to community management and development will be examined.

Learning Objectives:

analyse the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous communities;

develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous organisations;

gain an understanding of the relationships between Govern-ment/s and Indigenous peoples;

gain an understanding of how community development processes are applied in Indigenous organisations.
