Indigenous Australian Worldviews - Historical Perspectives

This subject aims to promote understanding of the complexity and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies as evidenced by `The Dreaming' and oral traditions pre 1788 and proceeds to investigate the history of government policies and practices from European invasion to the 1967 referendum. History is often contested ground. This is so of Indigenous Australian history.

Learning Objectives:

enable students to gain an understanding of Indigenous Australians, their history, culture and worldviews;

gain an understanding of the effects of the government policies and practices from the 1880s through to 1967;

communicate the results of research and thought;

develop the capacity to critically evaluate the rich variety of resources available.
