The "Linking Indigenousness" subjects are designed to provide students with an opportunity for direct interaction with Indigenous Australians in contemporary settings. The subject may be taught as a field trip or from the Cairns or Townsville campus. Students will be taught by the members of a specific Indigenous community, facilitated by staff of the School of Australian Indigenous Studies.

This subject provides students with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of contemporary Indigenous Australians and the issues that affect their lives. This is achieved through the use of a socio-historical framework that enables students to gain an insight into the current positioning of Indigenous Australians in Australian society.

Learning Objectives:

gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous Australian communities;

gain the ability to identify the mechanisms to conduct appropriate consultation with Indigenous Australian communities;

gain an understanding of protocols in conducting consultations within Indigenous Australian communities;

develop insights into the processes of Indigenous epistemological and ontological perspectives;

develop insights into ethical processes in relation to research within Indigenous Australian communities.

Assessment by written responses to multiple choice quiz based on issues covered during experiential learning component (20%); small group oral presentations to review learning experience (30%); 2,500 word field report (50%).
