News-gathering Techniques

This is a practical subject that builds on the knowledge of information-gathering techniques developed in IA1001 . Students analyse reports on such matters as local, state and national politics; science and technology; education; health and issues relating to the arts, using both traditional sources and the Internet. The art of questioning interviewees is an integral part of the subject.

Learning Objectives:

to gather information effectively and ethically;

to develop research and investigative skills;

to learn interviewing skills;

to shape information into news stories.

Assessment by regular news assignments (50%); supervised test (40%); tutorial participation (10%).
