Health Education and Promotion

26 hours lectures, 26 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

Available to all students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy and Sport and Exercise Science courses. Also available to students in other courses through negotiation with the Head of School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

This subject introduces students to the principles of health education and health promotion and to the historical context in which health promotion has evolved. Students will examine the various elements and models of health education and the relationship between health education and health promotion. Theories of behaviour and application of behaviour change models will be presented and the barriers and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change will be discussed. Students will be introduced to health education planning, techniques and delivery and will be involved in producing and evaluating health education media.

Learning Objectives:

describe the principles of health promotion outlined in the Ottawa Charter;

identify ways in which health education and promotion are relevant to the students' professional discipline;

analyse the relationship between health education and health promotion;

undertake a community based needs assessment for a health education/promotion project;

discuss the barriers to behaviour change and be able to apply models of behaviour change to selected health issues;

plan, design and deliver a health education talk;

critically analyse the role, quality and range of health education media;

evaluate the effectiveness of health education media;

develop a health education media resource for a defined audience.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination, end-of-semester oral presentation and assignments throughout the semester.
