Health and Health Care in Australia

HECS Band 2

26 hours lectures, 7.5 hours tutorials. Semester 2.

Available to all students enrolled in the Occupational Therapy, Pharmacy programs and the Diploma/Advanced Diploma of Indigenous Health. Also available to students in other programs through negotiation with the Head of School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

Demographic characteristics of the Australian population; location, age, ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status and education. Changes in the Australian population over time; births, deaths, migration and changes in the composition of the population. Epidemiological patterns of the Australian population; what makes people sick and well. Factors which have impact upon the health status of the population and how these factors are measured. Comparison of the health status of Australia with other nations. The structure of the Australian health care system. How decisions are made about health service activity; access, resource allocation, federal/state relations, paying for health. Accessing health and demographic data.

Learning Objectives:

describe the demographic characteristics of the Australian population;

describe the demographic characteristics of their home community;

describe changes in the Australian population;

describe the epidemiological patterns of the Australian population;

ability to compare the health of Australia with that of other nations;

describe the structure of the Australian health system;

use of ABS and other sources of data to describe the health of students' home population.

Assessment by mid-semester examination (20%); final examination (50%); project (30%).
