Nazism: Its Origins and Nature, 1870-1949

This subject examines the origins and nature of German National Socialism. Particular attention is paid to debates within the historiography of Nazism and European fascism and the cultural history of Germany during the Weimar Republic and the first five years of the Third Reich.

Learning Objectives:

to enhance knowledge and understanding of the major themes in German and European history between 1870 and 1949;

to enhance knowledge and understanding of European theories of citizenry and the state since 1870;

to enhance knowledge and understanding of central European literature, the visual arts and film in the period between 1919 and 1949.

Assessment by seminar participation (10%); seminar essay (40%); examination (50%).
