A study of selected themes in the history of the biomedical and social sciences in Europe from 1600 to 1900. Special attention is paid to the social application of medical and biological theories in Britain and France from 1780 to 1860.

Learning Objectives:

to enhance knowledge and understanding of the major themes in the history of the biomedical and social sciences in Europe between 1600 and 1900;

to enhance knowledge and understanding of European theories of physiology, organic reproduction, psychology and anthropology between 1600 and 1900.

Assessment by seminar participation (10%); seminar essay (40%); examination (50%).
