Australia: An Introductory History

This subject offers an overview of Australian history, from the establishment of a British colony at Botany Bay in 1788 to the present day. It pays particular attention to social and political history, while also examining continuities and changes in Australian culture and in Australia's role in world affairs.

Learning Objectives:

to acquire an understanding of the major issues and events in the history of Australia since colonisation;

to gain an appreciation of the major social, cultural and political forces that have shaped modern Australia;

to become familiar with a range of interpretations of Australian history;

to develop skills of research, analysis and writing appropriate to the discipline of history.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (10%); essays (35%); assignments (15%).
