Society and Culture in the Tropics

26 hours lectures, 12 hours tutorials. Semester 2.

In this subject students explore selected themes in the history of societies located in the world's tropical regions. Themes explored include the peculiarities of life-ways and culture in tropical environments, the nature of human settlement in the tropics and the experiences of social, political and cultural change.

Learning Objectives:

to acquire an understanding of the most important developments in the history of societies in tropical regions;

to gain an appreciation of the historical origins and development of social institutions, culture and life-ways in the tropics;

to develop skills in historical research, critical analysis and writing.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (10%); essays (35%); assignments (15%).
