Colonialism in History

26 hours lectures, 12 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

In this subject students study selected themes in the history of European colonialism. Themes explored include the motives for colonial expansion, relations between colonisers and the colonised, art and culture under colonialism, resistance and the nature of decolonisation.

Learning Objectives:

to acquire an understanding of the most important developments in the history of colonialism;

to gain an appreciation of the historical origins and development of colonial expansionism, the culture of colonialism and the processes of decolonisation;

to develop skills in historical research, critical analysis and writing.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (10%); essays (35%); assignments (15%).
