The Foundations of Western Culture

26 hours lectures, 11 hours tutorials. Semester 1.

In this subject students are introduced to some of the most important developments in the history of European philosophy, culture and politics from Greek and Roman times to 1800. The subject is designed to give students the intellectual foundations for further studies in various disciplines in the humanities and social sciences. Among topics studied are: Europe's Graeco-Roman heritage, the causes of cultural change in the early modern era and the causes of intellectual and social revolutions in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Learning Objectives:

to acquire an understanding of the most important developments in the history of European philosophy, culture and politics prior to 1800;

to gain an appreciation of the historical origins and development of the arts and sciences in western culture;

to develop skills in research, critical analysis and writing.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); tutorial attendance and participation (10%); essays (35%); assignments (15%).
