Contemporary Population Issues

This subject builds on the knowledge of population concepts and theories taught in Ge2304 . The contemporary population dimension to environmental changes is examined from a world perspective. The subject also focuses on contemporary thought and changes in the Australian society including youth identity, globalisation, contemporary family and household change, fertility and mortality transition, demographic perspectives of ageing and Indigenous societies.

Learning Objectives:

to provide an overview of current demographic issues;

to develop competency in research encompassing practical, oral and written skills;

to provide conceptual framework to examine population related issues;

to appreciate and apply the process of scientific inquiry, investigation and reporting.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (40%); field work workshops (40%); workshops (20%).
