Vector Design

Townsville

13 hours lectures, 39 hours practicals. Semester 2.

Available only to students enrolled in the Bachelor of Communication Design.

Central to this subject will be an introduction to industry standard vector based software - Macromedia Freehand and Adobe Illustrator. Students will learn techniques for developing vector based drawing within these programs as well as methods for capturing vectors from external sources such as digital pen input and bitmap conversions. The role of vector based graphics in print and a part of online publishing will be discussed extensively as well as the use of vectors in the 3D environment. These skills will be developed and implemented in a number of minor projects and a more comprehensive, major practical project.

Learning Objectives:

an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of vector based design;

a basic understanding of the Illustrator and Freehand working environments and be able to work confidently to produce and manipulate vector graphics;

an ability to export files in a number of different formats for digital and print publishing;

an understanding of the process and limitations of converting vectors to bitmap images.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (10%); other examinations (20%); presentations (10%); journal/practical work book (10%); three minor practical projects (10% each) (30%); one major practical project (20%).
