Students read closely one example of 19th century French prose and a selection of 20th century French poetry.

Learning Objectives:

to be able to apply analytic and critical skills to the reading of French literature;

to gain a deeper understanding of French culture and thought;

to increase the student's command of French, especially of vocabulary and idiom;

to apply the basic rules of essay writing and presentation.

Assessment by end-of-semester examination (60%); essays (40%).
